We are always looking for new members to come and join us singing on a Thursday night. We’re a friendly bunch and our rehearsals are often filled with as much laughter as they are music. While we welcome singers from all the vocal parts we are especially on the lookout for more tenors and basses. For some reason there seems to be a national shortage of singers in these parts. We are a non-auditioning choir and you would be more than welcome to come and give us a try for a couple of weeks before committing. It is not essential that you read music (some of our current members don’t), but the willingness to give it a go is appreciated, and people are more than happy to help if you need it. As you may know, we sing three concerts a year, one at Christmas, one around Easter time and a summer concert. The flavour of our concerts is quite different. As you’d expect the Christmas concert is full of festive cheer - Christmas carols, songs and suitable light choral works. The Easter concert is usually a longer classical choral work, where we are accompanied by an orchestra. You’d think this would be the hardest of our concerts each year, but generally, once you get into the feel of the piece the music comes fairly easily. The summer concert (like this one) is where we sing lighter, modern, popular pieces.
How long has Churchdown Choral Society been going? The Churchdown Choral Society has been entertaining audiences since 1983.
What sort of choir is Churchdown Choral society? We are a choir of mixed voices who love to sing and enjoy performing together. A non-auditioning choir, we are always ready to welcome new singers.
Do I need to be able to read music? An ability to read music is not essential but is obviously helpful.
Where and when do you rehearse? Rehearsals are at Parton Manor Junior School, Churchdown GL3 2DR on Thursday nights during term times from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. If in doubt, drop us an email and we'll let you know.
On the first Thursday of each month we try to finish at 9pm for a drink of coffee and a biscuit and a chance to circulate and meet new friends.
How many concerts do you sing a year? There are two formal concerts each year covering many of the major choral works, and since our formation, all of the popular composers have been performed. Our Christmas and Easter concerts often feature orchestral accompaniment. Each Summer a concert is given, usually in Churchdown Community Centre, where a less formal programme is performed, accompanied by an excellent supper!.
I like what I hear, how can I give it a try? If you would like to join us, you will be guaranteed a warm welcome! Come along to a rehearsal or contact us via our contact page above or email email@example.com. There's no obligation for the first few rehearsals.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
